5-Sulfoisophthalic acid, sodium salt 5-SSIPA (CAS: 6362-79-4)
Introduction
5-Sulfoisophthalic acid, sodium salt 5-SSIPA is commonly used to prepare amine-free waterborne polyester resins and waterborne polyurethanes for various coatings. The reaction typically yields water-soluble polyester resins with a high acid value, which can be neutralized with amines to form water-soluble salts. Polyester resins synthesized with 5-SSIPA are waterborne due to the ionic characteristics imparted by the sodium sulfonate group in 5-SSIPA. The structure of this aromatic dicarboxylic acid is similar to Eastman PIA (Purified Isophthalic Acid). The aromatic ring structure endows coatings with excellent hardness and high gloss.
Applications of 5-SSIPA
Third monomer for water-soluble modification of polyesters and nylons, used in producing polyester and nylon microfibers, such as island-in-sea fibers.
Third monomer for dye modification of polyesters and nylons, enhancing the dyeability and lightfastness of polyester and nylon fibers.
Intermediate for water-soluble modification of polyurethanes and polyesters, enabling the production of amine-free waterborne polyurethane and polyester coatings.
Intermediate for water-soluble polyester modification, used to manufacture water-soluble polyester printing and dyeing pastes as alternatives to PVA pastes.
Applications in magnetic tape binders and inks.
Used in preparing polyurethane (PU) dispersions for the coating film industry, providing coatings with exceptional hardness and high gloss.
Serves as an intermediate and modifier for pharmaceuticals and pesticides, making it widely applicable across diverse industries.
