Tetraisopropyl Titanate (TIPT) is an alkoxide of titanium and a highly reactive orthotitanate. It hydrolyzes rapidly upon exposure to atmospheric moisture and is primarily employed as a catalyst in esterification or transesterification reactions. It can also serve as a catalyst for polyolefin polymerization.
Furthermore, TIPT promotes adhesion and crosslinking of esters containing functional groups like hydroxyl or carboxyl, making it well-suited for heat-resistant and corrosion-resistant coatings. TIPT is also beneficial in the manufacturing of glass and fiberglass. Notably, TIPT is compatible only with oil-based systems.
TIPT is mainly produced through the reaction of titanium tetrachloride (TiCl₄) with isopropyl alcohol. The reaction equation is given below:
TiCl₄ + 4 (CH₃)₂CHOH → Ti[OCH(CH₃)₂]₄ + 4 HCl

Summary: Tetraisopropyl Titanate (TIPT) is an important organotitanium compound. Due to its special chemical properties and versatility, it has broad application prospects in chemical, materials, electronic, and pharmaceutical fields. When using it, be mindful of its sensitivity to moisture and take appropriate safety precautions. In particular, be careful to avoid contact with water, as this will lead to hydrolysis and degradation of the material.
